Client
BookAdventure was created by Sylvan to supplement their 780 Learning Centers in North America
and Asia by providing online reading and comprehension tools for students in grades K-8.
Challenge
To support BookAdventure’s growing audience, the Web application required a redesign with an
enhanced, more intuitive user interface, additional content and more effective technology
support.
Solution
Sylvan’s primary objective for BookAdventure was to entice users to engage in the site and
become active participants prior to registering with the application. WebCritical’s new
application design successfully completed this goal by providing a more intuitive user
interface, additional content features and engaging tools that turned browsers into active
application members. WebCritical also provided technology improvements and support for the
site through redesign of the technical architecture and reporting/approval/submission process
as well as support and training of Sylvan personnel.
The growth and support of the application was a multi-phase process. WebCritical
identified initial steps to rapidly repair bugs in the existing application, then offered
strategic expertise to direct the next steps for the growth and development of the technology
and user interface. Incomplete, non-working site features were repaired and improved and the
front and back-end configuration support for the first Book Bonanza Reading Contest were
designed and integrated.
In the second phase, WebCritical created a more engaging user interface, focusing on
children with little to no Internet experience. Parents and Teachers sections were created
to offer more opportunities for involvement in their children’s education process and to
encourage registration. The ASP (Active Server Pages), SQL and HTML were managed and daily
maintenance support was provided including short-term site fixes and long-term solutions in
response to daily client requests.
The final phases included:
- Enhancement of existing components
- Daily and seasonal content replacement
- Knowledge transfer and training of BookAdventure personnel
- Consulting for back-end architecture redesign
- Contest launch and management
- Strategic growth planning
Results
The BookAdventure application successfully enhances Sylvan’s operations by increasing market
exposure and providing an alternative learning experience for their audience. The Web
application boasts over 4,000 book titles and supports more than 1 million quizzes annually.
As a result of the creative and technical redesign, the Baltimore Business Journal recognized
BookAdventure and WebCritical with the Innovative User Experience Award.
